It’s an XBOX, Not a “Video Game”

I’ve been watching the Run’s House marathon on MTV the past few days. The more I watch that show, the more it grows on me. One of my favorite parts is when the youngest son (Russy) buys a Wii with the money he was supposed to spend on clothes. When Dad (Joe) goes to talk to him about what he’d done wrong, he ends up getting addicted to the Wii instead.

Anyways, the relevant part is this: there was a point in this particular episode when a Wii is referred to as a “video game.” This is something that has always bothered me, when people call video game CONSOLES (or systems) “video game.” It’s not a freakin’ video game. You can’t say “you bought a new video game” when really what was purchased was the console itself: XBOX, WII, PLAYSTATION, ETC. ARE NOT “VIDEO GAMES!” They are platforms to play video games on.

That’s like you going out and buying a boom box and then me saying “why’d you have to buy another one of those CDs?” That’s just ignorant.

Also, I don’t like it when people refer to things that are important to you by prefacing them with the words “your” or “your little”. For example, don’t say “just go play your little game” or “I know you like your video games…”

Why has that always bothered me? I just feel like people who talk like this are usually being demeaning, like they have more important things to do than be concerned with “my little interests.”

I’m just being whiney.
